UM Institutional Sustainability Efforts – UM Broad Council

The Broad Council for Sustainability at the University of Mississippi has pushed to further institutionalize sustainability across campus in previous years. The Council serves as an organizational structure to facilitate the diffusion of sustainability throughout the university. The objectives of the Broad Council for Sustainability focus on overseeing the development of a sustainability plan and climate action plan.

The Broad Council for Sustainability is comprised of upper level administrators, relevant university departments, and other important stakeholder groups.

Roles and Responsibilities

Council Advisors.  Chosen and invited by the Chancellor’s Office, representatives in this group will meet quarterly to biannually and primarily serve to oversee and guide efforts of Working Groups.

Office of Sustainability. Supports the Broad Council by organizing agendas and presentations for the Council meetings.  The Office of Sustainability will also help form and support Working Groups.

Working Group Members.  Working Groups will be created to take on specific, time-bound tasks or projects.  Membership is temporary and includes more frequent meetings to complete the project. An example of a working group would be a Sustainability Tracking and Rating System (STARS) – Academics & Research Working Group.  This working group would be formed by faculty who volunteer to help complete the Academics & Research component of the STARS data collection system.

Student Partners.  One individual from each of the identified student partner groups will serve as the designated contact and will be notified of and invited to attend all Council meetings.
