2009 – 2010 Green Student Interns


Brent Caldwell

Rebel Pedals and Car-Share Program

Brent Caldwell is a native of St. Martin, Mississippi. His interest in sustainability was generated by his father, Michael, who is an avid outdoorsman. Brent interned in the Office of Sustainability his senior year. During his time at Ole Miss, Brent was actively involved in furthering sustainability around campus. His freshman year, he worked with Dr. Linda Spargo in the Chancellor’s Office to implement a pilot program of recycling in the Grove. Brent later approached the Associated Student Body about the possibility of creating a campus bicycle sharing program. As a GSIP intern, he continued those efforts by focusing on managing and expanding the Rebel Pedals bike-share program. Brent graduated in 2010 with a double major in philosophy and public policy leadership.


Andre’ Cotten

Rebel Pedals and Alternative Transportation

Andre’ Cotten is a native of Madison, MS. He was an intern in the Office of Sustainability during his senior year at Ole Miss. He double majored in Public Policy Leadership and English. Throughout his time as a student, Andre’ was very active on campus as part of the Associated Student Body. As the Co-Director of Student Services, he worked to help implement Rebel Pedals and promote its use by organizing several outreach events on campus. His main focus while with the GSIP program was working to help establish a comprehensive ride share program that includes Zimride, Zipcar, and to further develop the bike share program.


Sarah Gehring

Green Events

Sarah Gehring was a GSIP intern her junior and senior year at Ole Miss. She is from Hernando, Mississippi and majored in Nutrition and Dietetics. Outside of GSIP, Sarah was an active volunteer for many groups in the Oxford community and on campus. As a student, she volunteered at the local hospital and at the Oxford Lafayette Recycling Center. She previously served as secretary of the National Society of Leadership and is an alumni of Alpha Omicron Pi and Students for a Green Campus. Sarah worked as a desk receptionist in the Residential College and is was active in the Student Dietetic Association and in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. During her time at Ole Miss, Sarah researched and created a roadmap for the University’s dining services to integrate more sustainable practices into its operations in the future.


Stephanie Jabaley

Green Business Alliance Program

Stephanie Jabaley interned for the Office of Sustainability during her sophomore year and part of her junior year. She was a Risk Management and Insurance major with a minor in Political Science and a native of  Annandale , Virginia. Stephanie was in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, Vice President of the Business School, and a member of the RMI Society and Kappa Delta Sorority. During her time as an intern, Stephanie worked with local business owners and community leaders to establish a Green Business Alliance program. She held the position of Co-Director of Student Services for the ASB where she was able to combine ASB green initiatives with the initiatives of the Office of Sustainability. Since graduating in 2012 she has been working for Burns & Wilcox in New Orleans as an associate underwriter.


Jonathan Jones

Smart Synch/Energy Management Program

Jonathan was a junior when he interned in the Office of Sustainability. He earned his degree in chemical engineering, and is from Long Beach, Mississippi. His focus as an intern was enhancing the University’s energy management program. Jonathan worked alongside the University Physical Plant and UM’s smart grid partner, SmartSynch, to accurately gauge power consumption and develop strategies that improve operational efficiencies. Outside the GSIP program, Jonathan was a scholar of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Ole Miss Women’s Council. During his time at Ole Miss, he also worked with the Engineering Student Body and helped to establish the Ole Miss Engineers Without Borders organization.


Elizabeth Seratt

350.org and UM’s Climate Action Plan

Elizabeth Seratt was an intern in the Office of Sustainability her freshman year. She was an international studies and German double major, and grew up in Greenville, Mississippi. Although her parents now live a little ways down Highway 61 in Vicksburg, she will always consider Greenville and the Delta home. She greatly enjoys outdoor activities, sleeping, reading and expanding her collections of aprons and Buddhas. Elizabeth has a lifelong goal to visit every continent, but for her short-term goals, she has been pursuing her goals of becoming a Brothers Grimm scholar, environmental proponent, professional student, and writer. During her time here, Elizabeth lead the implementation of UM’s 350.org project, which focuses on building awareness on global warming. She also took part in the development of the University’s long-term climate action plan.


Elliott Warren

Gameday Recycling Program

Elliott was an intern in the Office of Sustainability his junior year at Ole Miss. He earned his degree in public policy leadership, and is from Brookhaven, Mississippi. During his time at Ole Miss, he was a Chancellor and Dean’s list honor student, as well as an active member of several organizations on campus including the Trent Lott Leadership Institute, Ole Miss College Republicans, Ole Miss Students for a Green Campus, Hope for Africa, Ole Miss chapters of Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl, and the Sigma Chi fraternity. Elliott has volunteered with Big Brother/Big Sister in Oxford and attends College Hill Presbyterian Church in Oxford. In his spare time he enjoys running, cycling, hunting, and fishing. Elliott lead UM’s gameday recycling in the Grove during the fall of 2009 and 2010. His hopes as an intern were to establish a recycling program that can be applied for any major events that occur on campus in the future.
